2009 Atomic Adventure Race Start

After a tremendously successful inaugural race, the Atomic Adventure Race presented by Fuji Bikes will return in 2010 to bring the excitement and thrill of adventure racing to the Southeast!  Teams of racers will endure 24 hours of mental and physical exhaustion to reach the glorious finish line that over one third of the field did not enjoy last year.

For the competitors last year who enjoyed this high-intensity race course with an expedition feel, the course design will offer intense, all-new experiences in 2010.  Team ROC Gear/4LPH4 1337 took the course from the concept to mountaintops in four months last year--the 2010 start will be eight months in the making; twice the excitement, twice the fun, and twice the adventure!

2009 Atomic Adventure Race Night VisionAnd with the Team ROC Gear/4LPH4 1337 name comes the high tech media crew.  Live online coverage will include blogging, photos, all-new voice streams, helmet cam & videographer videos, shout-outs from fans delivered on course to the racers, and an in-action leaderboard showing the progress of the race, so fans, friends, and families at home can follow along while teams compete for top prizes, series points, and bragging rights.

2009 Atomic Adventure Race Prizes

We had a tremendous turnout from the sponsors at the inaugural race--the racers benefited with full suspension mountain bike frames from Fuji Bikes, bike overhauls from Reality Bikes, altimeter watches from ROC Gear, full and free printing rights to race photos by TheElleStudio, gels, drinks, and powders from Hammer Nutrition, backpacks and shoes by Inov-8, first aid kits from Adventure Medical Kits, and much more.  In 2010 the sponsors are returning and will be accompanied by an all new group looking to let racers try out their products.

And it's not just sponsors returning, the race will be welcoming back previous champions Lab Rats, hailing from Arkansas, and runners-up Layer 3 and Paradofobia.  Elite teams Team SOG (previously Nature Cure) from Pennsylvania, Shake-A-Leg Miami out of Florida, and Georgia locals ROAM/Inov-8 also have committed to returning, and many new teams, including 2009 Checkpoint Tracker Series Champions Checkpoint Zero, are jumping on board.

2009 Atomic Adventure Race WaterfallThe race will return to Amicalola Falls State Park, GA on May 15th of 2010 and is both a USARA National Championship Qualifier as well as a proud member of the Checkpoint Tracker Adventure Racing Series, where teams compete over the course of the year for over top honors and an all-expenses paid trip to compete in one or more world-class expedition races.  The race will allow both teams of 3 and teams of 2.  Registration cost will be $165 per racer.  The race is unsupported and Race Management will perform any and all gear shuttles during the race.

Registration is open.  Early bird payment GUARANTEES you race the Atomic Adventure Race presented by Fuji Bikes (early bird entries are transferable to future years--in the unfortunate event you cannot make it to the starting line in 2010 and are past the refund dates, your 2010 entry will carry over to 2011).

Team ROC Gear/4LPH4 1337 is an adventure racing team located in the Atlanta area. We've dubbed ourselves the most technologically advanced team out there. We have been competing for two years, during which time we've fielded 21 teams at races from Florida to Virginia. The team's 8 members have backgrounds in competitive distance running, mountain biking, rowing, and triathlon.

Race Schedule PDF Print E-mail

The race will begin on May 15th, 2010 and finish the following day. Here's the basic schedule:

Friday, May 14th
5:00pm - 8:15pm: Race Check-In
8:15pm - 9:00pm: Team Captain Meeting

Saturday, May 15th
6:45am - 7:00am: Pre-Race Briefing
7:00am: Race Start

Sunday, May 16th
2:00pm: Race Cutoff
2:00pm - 4:00pm: Awards Ceremony, Gear Drawing, Post-Race Meal

Two things to note if you attended last year's race:

  1. Pre-race plotting/strategy Friday night will be far less involved, meaning at least one more hour of sleep for folks the night before.  We are doing this largely to allow folks to have more flexibility as to when they show up.  We had a fairly large bottleneck as check-in opened up last year and so we are hoping that some teams will opt to arrive a little later now (but don't everyone show up late!!) that they know they will not have to burn the midnight oil by doing so.
  2. Lead teams will not be finishing in the early hours of morning in the 2010 Atomic Adventure Race.  This means less waiting for them for the post-race awards ceremony.
